Gel wax – the glowing choice

Gel wax is a fairly new wax on the market that has made an explosion in the past 10 years. It has gained popularity as it is generally a clear wax that has the ability to cast more light when lit, as the wax tends to appear to glow somewhat as it reflects the light from the flame.

Gel wax has come a long  way from the original days when you would buy packages of crystals that you would have to cook with mineral oil until they came together to create gel wax. Now gel wax can be purchased in bulk, or in the craft store, and is fully ready to use. It may seem as simple as melt, color, pour – but it’s not.

Gel wax needs special wicks to burn properly, and you have to make sure that you use appropriate fragrance oils that are gel wax compatible. Also, not all candle colorants are gel wax compatible. If you use fragrance oils or colorants that are not gel compatible you can either end up with a candle that burns unevenly, explodes, or does not burn because the wick gets clogged up.

Let me know if you have any questions and I will be happy to answer them.
