If at first you don’t succeed……..

I’ve been trying to create a solid lotion bar in a push-up stick form that is vegan friendly and have had some difficulty with it. I used to make one with beeswax but wanted another product for our vegetarian and vegan customers.

My first attempt was with using coconut oil, cocoa butter and soy wax. While it was a nice product it was very soft, a little grainy and started off very greasy before it finally soaked in. Great for use around the office here, but not a product that I was willing to sell.

The second attempt was using coconut oil, cocoa butter and candelilla wax. Candelilla wax comes from a desert plant native to northeast Mexico. The Candelilla plant produces a scale-like covering to protect it from the ravages of the desert. The problem with this trial was that it was too firm and didn’t spread on the skin at all. Too heavy on the solid components and not enough soft components.

The third attempt was the charm! I took the recipe that I had used in the second attempt and added avocado oil which it is believed to be very nourishing for the skin as well as It is has a high natural Vitamin E content (as well as A, B1, B2 and D). It helped to smooth out the product and make is user friendly. It is smooth and goes on the skin easily and absorbs quickly. It pushes up easily in the tube and is just what I was looking for.

An added benefit that I wasn’t looking for but ended up with was that it holds up well with hand washing. It doesn’t leave greasy fingerprints all over the place and leaves my hands very soft

It will be available for sale on BodybyM.com starting November 1, 2008. We will be offering it in an unscented form, which has little scent of it’s own.
